Our standards

Editorial Policy

The standards every piece of content on HotColdHaven is held to — how we stay independent, source our facts, handle health topics, use AI responsibly, and correct our work.

Last updated: June 2026

1. Editorial independence

Our recommendations reflect our own editorial judgment. No brand pays for placement, coverage, or a favourable review, and the commission a product pays never influences whether or where it appears in a ranking. We routinely recommend lower-cost options, name products’ weaknesses, and tell readers what to skip — including profitable upsells. Where we sell certain accessories directly, we keep those clearly separate from our independent editorial roundups.

2. Sourcing & accuracy

We aim to be a reference you can trust, which means:

  • No fabrication, ever. We do not invent specifications, prices, test results, or reviews. If we haven’t verified something, we don’t present it as fact.
  • Real, citable sources. Claims are grounded in reputable third-party testing, manufacturer documentation, peer-reviewed research, or first-hand experience — and we link to sources where appropriate.
  • Cross-checking. Manufacturer marketing is a starting point, not proof. We seek independent confirmation for strong claims and flag when a figure is the brand’s own.
  • Dated and time-bound. Specs and prices change; every article shows a last-updated date, and we ask readers to confirm current details before purchasing.

Our full method is described on the testing & evaluation process page.

3. Authorship & expertise

Every article is published under a named author with a visible last-updated date, and reflects research synthesised from multiple independent sources. As we grow, we are adding first-hand testing and specialist contributors — including experienced installers and health professionals to review relevant content. We’re transparent about the level of hands-on experience behind any given guide rather than implying expertise we don’t have.

4. Health content

Some of our content discusses heat and cold exposure and their potential effects. For these topics we rely on peer-reviewed research and distinguish clearly between well-established findings and preliminary evidence. Our health content is educational and is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Heat and cold therapy carry genuine risks for some people, so we consistently recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional before starting — particularly for anyone with cardiovascular conditions, blood-pressure concerns, or who is pregnant. Relevant articles carry a medical disclaimer and a references section.

5. How we use AI

We use AI tools to assist our research and drafting, with human oversight. We believe in being upfront about this:

  • AI tools may help us gather and organise research, structure articles, and produce first drafts.
  • A human reviews, edits, and is accountable for what we publish. We verify factual claims, prices and specifications against primary and reputable third-party sources before publishing.
  • We do not publish AI output unchecked, and we do not use AI to fabricate experiences, reviews, citations, or data.
  • Responsibility for accuracy and for our recommendations rests with HotColdHaven and the named author — not with any tool.

6. Corrections & updates

We get things wrong sometimes, and when we do we fix them. If you spot an error — an outdated price, a changed spec, or a factual mistake — please contact us and we’ll review it promptly. Substantive corrections are made transparently, and we revisit guides when new models launch, prices shift materially, or new evidence changes a recommendation. The last-updated date on each article reflects our most recent review.

7. Commercial transparency

HotColdHaven is reader-supported through affiliate commissions and through accessories we sell directly. This support never affects our editorial judgment. Exactly how this works — and how to identify these links — is set out in full on our affiliate disclosure.

8. Product images & trademarks

To represent real products accurately, we use manufacturers’ official product imagery for the items we review, and all brand names, logos and trademarks remain the property of their respective owners. Their use here is for identification and editorial commentary and does not imply any endorsement or partnership unless explicitly stated. Educational illustrations and infographics are our own.
